Lingua Split
[From a very unscientific, empirical set of observations made over the last few weeks at IIT-B]
The split of languages here that I've heard cumulatively in various places in IIT-B (leaving out Hindi and English) include Marathi, Bengali and Malayalam (especially among staffers). But the winning tongue is Telugu - I don't know how come there are so many Andhra guys in IIT-B. But I guess this is in keeping with the general trend in the top academic institutes in India. That community must be the most academic minded one in India.
There are few Tamilians, but not that many. Come to think of it, haven't heard a single phone of Gujarati yet.

Same here, in IIM L also, the "Gults" are in a sizeable proportion.
all the IITs have them. BITS Pilani has max andhraites.
Infact they are so conspicious becoz they tend to hang together a lot.
Apparently lot of stress is given to competitive exams in AP.
as a stat none of the fst 30 ppl in the merit list in the 12th standard exams in AP joined any institute there..they did not attend the state counselling, and this is the trend every year..
As Dilip Oak once said,"(US) Universities have four kinds of people: Whites, Chinks, Indians and Gults".

Move to a Northern IIT, and you will find Biharies in abundance in IIT.
Like Gujratis, Haryanavies are conspicous by their absence!
